GreenSandwich
Quick and easy ordering for a Group
UX/UI Design - Conceptual Project
OVERVIEW
GreenSandwich is a local food ordering app that provides group and customized orders with fresh and healthy ingredients. It targets busy customers and groups who want to order their food easily and quickly with a smooth process.
The Problem
Ordering multiple items or customized food for a group is not easy and takes a long time. It can makes users stressed and gives them an unhappy experience.
My Role
UX/UI Design and User Research:
I conducted user interviews, research, and competitive analysis, and then created a user flow, wireframes, prototypes, and user testing.
The Solutions
I designed a sharing link for a group order, allowing several people to order together, with all the food bding picked up by one person.
The person responsible for ordering can create a group ordering link and share it with the group members to order food together. After each member orders and pays for their food through the link, the designated person can pick up all the group food at the person at the chosen time.
Design Process
EMPATHIZE + DEFINE
Understanding the users...
During the empathize phase of the project, I conducted five user interviews to gain a better understanding of the problems user face when ordering food through app. Through these interviews, I aimed to learn about user behaviors and needs with food ordering apps.
-
5 user interviews
-
Mapped out a competitor and analysis
Competitive Market Research
Our key competitors are Jersey Mike’s Subs, Ham's Sandwich, and Lu’s Sandwiches. These three are direct competitors to GreenSandwich.
Jersey Mike's Subs
-
Clear and clean layout
-
Menu is easy to find and read
-
Ordering process is confused
-
Catering but no group ordering service
-
Cannot view menu details as a guest before fill in the personal form
Ham's Sandwich
-
All main food is customized only
-
Ordering process is confused
-
No menu images
-
Fun and friendly branding
-
No group ordering service
-
No catering service
Lu's Sandwich
-
All main food is customized
-
Weak brand identity
-
No group ordering service
-
No catering service
There were already many similar Sandwich ordering apps in the local market. Our three key competitors all provided customized features on the main menu but not all the apps didn't have group ordering. (Only one app provided catering service and all three didn't provide group ordering.)
User Journey Map From User Interview
Based on the interviews, I created user journey maps that showed that illustrated how users felt, behaved their goals during the food ordering process. I had attached one of the user journey maps.
User Paint Points
I got three main user pain points related to ordering food for group from general apps. I aimed to understand their biggest pain points during the ordering process.
Confusing order process and no ordering histories for future quick orders
Moving back and forth across pages to order food is not easy, and group or customized orders can be confusing
Need an easy and intuitive solution for customized and group food ordering
Users want to add multiple items easily and quickly. Gathering several people's order information and then choosing multiple items is not easy, and it takes a long time. It makes users frustrated while using the process in most apps
Hard to know the estimated pick-up time during the order
Most users prefer to know and select their food pick-up time in an early stage, rather than during the checkout process
Insights
Hard to order for multiple times
In general, users want to choose multiple items on same page or with fewer clicks, instead of back and forth to check items
Group or family order takes a long time
In general, users want to see a group/family menu to choose items quickly, instead of finding each item for a group
Show pickup time selection in early
Most users want to know and select their food pick-up time at an early stage, rather than during checkout process
Hard to customize food
In general, users want to see simple and clear directions for food customization
What did I learn?
-
Make it possible to select multiple items clearly and quickly
-
Create group/family menus and show previous order history to facilitate quick odedring
-
Display available pick-up times and allow to choose the time options while selecting items
-
Provide a clear and simple page for food customization
User Flows
After conducting the interviews, I altered the user flow of the app to provide a better experience for the users. Based on user pain points, I decided to focus my efforts on improving the customizing food, group ordering, and pick-up time processes.
New user with or without login:
Returning user for a group and customized ordering:
As a returning user, you can save time and reduce clicks by accessing your previous order history of saves list. Additionally, you can easily return to the menu page from the order detail page to add more d food or modify your pick-up time option before placing your order.
Design System
To get the consistency in color themes, icons, fonts, and colors, I created a design system.
This system enhanced reading legibility, and the chosen color palette represented a fresh and cohesive mood for the company brand.
The group ordering process involves using a shared link for your group
Group ordering through a sharing link
When you enter the group order, you select a quality, and then you have the option to proceed with general group ordering or create a group link to share with your group members
Choose your group members from your phone contacts or enter their phone numbers
Group members will the shared link from you to place their orders
Once you have sent a shared link to your group members, they can start ordering food without the need to downloading the app
Choose a pick-up time and see all the members' ordered items
When all the members finish their order, you can choose a pick-up time and pick up all the group all the group food

USABILITY TEST
Usability Testing
How did your users respond?
I received positive and motivating feedback from users regarding the user-friendly design and creative shared link group ordering and pickup by one person
What I learned?
While designing the GreenSandwich app, I learned that minimal and intuitive features make the app easier to use. Usability studies and user feedback influenced each iteration of the app's design, Additionally, design feedback iterations can significantly improve the overall design
NEXT STEP
What's next?
First, I would like to add a note and ingredient-choosing options for all the food.
Secondly, I'll conduct one more usability test with senior aged users to test whether the app how is easy or not.
